Snake Eyes
Is âSnake Eyesâ worth seeing? In a word, no. That doesnât mean that the movie doesnât have its merits, though. Let me dive right into it and tell you what I thought of it. This is Henry Goldingâs movie.
He is great! Eh, he is adequate. His accent was NOT good. The whole movie, I was monitoring his accent, and it was about half and half, pertaining to how much he stuck to it. Other than that, though, he was fine. His face-acting was good! I felt like he knew what he was doing and he didnât seem too angry when he was supposed to be angry or too pleased when he was supposed to be pleased. (which is a problem I see a lot in a lot of actors face-acting) I felt like he did some legit martial art training for this movie, which I liked. Martial arts as well as sword fighting has almost an artistic, dance element to it that transfers really well to screen and can be filmed really beautifully and Henry Golding, I think, added to that really well rather than taking the focus off the art and putting it on him. The point is, if you only have seen Henry Golding in âCrazy Rich Asiansâ like me (I did not see his other film, âLast Christmasâ), this is quite a different role from his role in that, but this movie will not make you dislike him as an actor. He is just one of those people who seems like a star, it must be his look or something. I feel like he has some big projects coming his way, I assumed âSnake Eyes'' was going to be one of them, but maybe those big projects are still on the horizon.
Another aspect that I quite liked was the production design! The scenes were beautiful! They reminded me a lot of the new âKarate kidâ with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. Where you feel like youâre watching a piece of Asian cinema but you know youâre probably not. It was like that. Like you feel like you can walk outside and itâll be humid and cloudy having just had a rainy day in Asia.
Letâs talk about some of the things that I did not like. The biggest problem I had with this movie was the lack of character development. Aside from the main character, Henry Golding, and about two or three of the other main characters, I had no idea who the other characters were! More importantly, I did not care about them or their abilities to help the story progress.
This leads into my next qualm with the movie, the story. I donât know if I am just dumb or if other people had this problem too but I could not follow the storyline. It was almost as if I would like come to and see that they were doing something or going after someone and I would have to quickly adjust my brain to follow it.
I know that this is a G.I. Joe movie and it is not supposed to be taken seriously, but there were multiple moments where I felt like I was watching a movie made for television, or a really high budgeted Disney Channel Original Movie. It was sad. I felt bad for it. I was hoping that itâd be amazing and outshine âShang-Chiâ which comes out this September, but alas, it will not. I am just waiting for some production company to shine brighter than Marvel, but that doesnât seem to ever happen. I had high hopes for âSnake Eyesâ but it seems that the trailers lied to me. Excuse me, Iâm going to go watch âCrazy Rich Asiansâ to get this movie off of my mind.
