Review:
What did I think of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? I freakin LOVED it! I went in with the mindset of “I can’t believe I am seeing another Spider-Man movie. I know it’ll suck because it’s an animation AND it’s pg; it’s practically a kids movie! This’ll be a waste of time.” Boy was I wrong. I am surprised, pleasantly surprised, at how wrong I was. The film takes a whole new approach to the legend of Spider-Man and pokes fun at the fact that so many iterations of this story has been done.
The animation is a separate story all on it’s own. The reason that this film was animated is not because it’s a kids movie, it’s because having the film be animated adds to the “comic book nature.” The story of Spider-Man does come from a comic book series, for those of you who don’t know, so it was nice to have this film pay homage to its original medium in it’s animation technique. You may be asking how can a film be like a comic book? Let me tell you. There are, at times, squiggles coming out of people’s heads, people’s thoughts are, at times, projected on screen, even the way the characters are drawn are simplistic, as would have been in a comic book, yet detailed, perfect for an animated film made for a technologically advanced world in 2018.
Real quick, I just want to mention the colors. One more pro of using animation is that there can be a lot more color and the color can be more vibrant, which it was. My one real complaint with this film is that Miles’ relationship with his uncle did not get explored more.
I would rate this movie as a solid 9.2/10
Great review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Dev! Makes me want to see this! Please help me talk Brooke into it. :). It was great to catch up today!
I agree. This film was amazing. I personally loved the story and character development, the emotion and development of the father-son relationship, and what I was most impressed with was the brilliant art direction. They executed several artistic techniques that are rarely or never used in films and had the most interesting mix of comic book cartoon and CG realism.
Excellent film.
