Review:
I went in to this film thinking yes! Three tour de force actors?! This’ll be incredible! I was wrong. I will say that James McAvoy’s performance was the highlight of this film for me. He really embodied all of the characters he was playing. His posture, the look in his eyes changed when he became a new person when he began playing a new character. I left the theater fully believing he was as crazy as he seemed in the film.
Bruce Willis, on the other hand, played Bruce Willis. When I think of him, I think of a strong, tough, emotionless badass man. If that is what you want from Bruce Willis then you will not be disappointed. There was not enough, if any, character building for him. I didn’t know anything about his story which peaked my interest in him. So I didn’t care when he started doing stuff or when stuff started happening to him.
Samuel L. Jackson’s character, glass, after which the movie is named after, had a little more depth than Bruce Willis’ character, not much though. Us, as the audience, have a general sense of who he is and his backstory. Things are alluded to in the film of stuff he has done. I thought Sam Jackson did a good enough job with the material he was given. I really like the idea of his character, it just missed the mark, for me.
Just for a second, I would like to mention Sarah Paulson’s performance. I wouldn’t call her a main character, but she did do some fine acting. She was very believable at playing the character she did. She did a good job at convincing you she was one thing, then at the end “pulling off the mask.”
The story, overall, was lacking. I spent the first half trying to figure out what was going on, then, after the story was made clear, everything was just a mess. The story got sloppy, I didn’t feel as drawn to the characters as I suspect I should have, I was just kind of “meh” about the whole thing.
I would rate this film a 4.90/10
