Review:

I never saw the original Disney animated Dumbo. So, you might wonder, what would possess you to go see the live action remake? Good question. I didn't really want to go and I didn’t really not want to go, so I was just like, eh, why not? I can’t say I loved it nor can I say i hated it. In my opinion, it was just meh.

First, let’s talk about Tim Burton. I haven’t personally liked most of the things that he has done. To me, every film that I’ve seen of his has somewhat of a dark vibe to it. It may not be a dark story in and of itself, but it feels like it could be dark or like it could turn dark and ominous at any moment. I, typically, don’t like dark stories, hence why I am not a huge fan of his. It kind of worked for me in this story, though. I mean, think about it, the story of Dumbo is kind of weird, right? Even if you were like me, and never saw the animated film, you still know the general basis of the story, it’s an elephant that uses its ears to fly. It’s just a weird and a different story, so, for me, having a director that is usually pretty weird and different worked.

The cast was great. Part of the reason that I went to see this movie was because of the starry cast. I am convinced that Michael Keaton can do no wrong. He is just such a good actor. Colin Farrell did a good job too, I didn’t love some of his storyline, like the interweaving of cowboy story into that of the circus. However, I did love the story of him coming home from the war, I think that made it more relatable and made the setting more obviously the United States and not some imaginary place. Eva Green was one of the main characters. You may recognize her as Vesper from “Casino Royale,” I know that’s what I recognized her from. And boy do I love her! She just looks good all the time, in my opinion, and this movie was no different. I don’t even care if she acts well, just have her stand there and it will add to the scene.

The last person from the movie that I want to talk about is Nico Parker, who played Colin Farrell’s daughter in the movie. At the beginning of the movie, I did not like her. I felt that she was over-acting and too serious. I was like, c’mon have some fun, be a kid! But when I stopped to think about it, her dad was at war and she was kind of having to be a mother figure to her younger brother, so maybe her seriousness was necessary.

Now let’s talk about the movie. There were parts of this movie where it felt quite magical, where I felt like I was a kid experiencing the Disney magic for the first time. There were other parts, though, where the magic felt so forced that it kind of felt like a high-end animated film. Those parts, though, where I felt that “little kid magic” was worth sitting through everything else. Also, the end scene, I won’t spoil anything, but the end of the movie was just so joyous and relieving, I felt so happy.

Overall, I wouldn’t not recommend this movie. If you just really want to go to the cinema and will see anything, then I would say you should see this. This movie isn’t the type of movie, though, where I would say you would missing out by not seeing it.

I would rate this movie a 5.1/10.
