Review:
I love Rebel Wilson! Everything she does, I think, is comedy gold. I was convinced that I could literally watch a movie of her doing nothing but standing there and I would be like eh, that was a decent movie. I don’t think that anymore.
I did get the sense that she was trying really hard, and I think that was because she was the lead character in this movie. This leads me to believe that she might be better off as a supporting character. I mean, think of how funny she was in ”How to be Single” and the pitch perfect series. She is super funny, but often not on her own. This was the way I thought with Kristin Wiig and Maya Rudolph, they’re not as funny on their own. In ensemble settings, like SNL, they’re hilarious, not so much on their own, though.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Those are 2 women that are funny by themselves and with other people. Anyway, rant over. This movie was funny, at times. Some of the jokes really landed, others were kind of slapstick comedy-esc and didn’t quite fit. This leads me to my next point of the first third of the film being off-the-walls silly, then the other two-thirds being REALLY dry and serious. It was almost as if the writers really wanted to get this film released by Valentines Day 2019, and when their writing was taking too long, they just scrambled and made up any old story. It was a little reminiscent of a regular rom-com, though, in that I usually lose interest in about the last third of the film, when they realize they’re in love and the jokes become less prevalent. This film just had a more extreme part of the film that I was uninterested in.
This is what I like to call a “nonsense movie.” You don’t get anything out of it, you don’t, really, learn from it, you watch it to get out of your head and have a good time. That’s what this film is, a good time, no, not even a good time, just a fine time. I think this film is more suited for airplanes, hotels, and redbox- the ancillary market, as it’s called. Is it a bad film? No. Is it a great film? No. It’s meh.
I would rate this movie a 4.7/10.
