Spider-Man: Far From Home
[Devin Dayley]
Director: Jon Watts
Stars:
Tom Holland
Samuel L. Jackson
Jake Gyllenhaal
Synopsis:
In a movie following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Peter Parker (Spider-Man/Holland) and his schoolmates are out of school for the summer and are taking a class trip around Europe. Once called upon by Nick Fury (Jackson), Spider-Man must become an all-out hero instead of just being the “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.” His mission this time is to save his friends and a great number of others from “the elementals” with the fellow hero Mysterio (Gyllenhaal). Or is that his mission?
Review:
I thought for sure that I was over the Marvel Cinematic Universe and over superhero movies. My whole rational was that the Avengers franchise drained me of all emotions with ”Avengers: Endgame” and I didn’t want to get emotionally involved with characters again knowing that they will inevitably change and one day leave the franchise. Makes sense, eh? So, I told myself that I would not become a big fan of another Marvel movie franchise to save myself from the sadness of it coming to an end. Well, I am sorry to say- hmm, sorry? Am I sorry? that I did not keep the commitment to myself because I am a huge fan of this Spider-Man franchise and, more especially, this movie.
I have always really liked Tom Holland. I want to be his friend. He is so cool. Maybe I want to be his brother. Hmm, no I don’t. If I were his brother, I think I would just be jealous of him and resent him for being cool. Friends are fine. I think he is perfect for his role of Spider-Man. I think he brings a comedic presence to the heroes in the MCU, much like Chris Pratt does. More than that though, Tom Holland brings a youthful energy to the members of the MCU which I love. If we were just watching a group of older people saving the world it could be awesome, or it could be something that the members of the younger audience (which I include myself in) would not connect with and therefore lose interest in. Anyway, I just love Tom Holland. Also, he LOVES Tony Stark and I love Tony Stark. So, that could add to my love of Tom Holland. It’s love by extension.
Not only does he deliver as the hero that we all are fans of, he also delivers in being a teenager that struggles with his feelings and misses his friend as well as wanting to go back in time to live life as it was before the events of “Avengers: Endgame” plagued the world. Oh, Tom Holland just does a great job! I don’t know why he doesn’t do more in the world of acting.
Jake Gyllenhaal. Man, is he cool too! I want to be him. Not I want to be like him, I want to be him. I want to be friends with Tom Holland but be Jake Gyllenhaal. Am I just basically saying that I want my life to be a movie? I guess you could say...YES! I think it is funny what Marvel is doing. Similar to “Captain Marvel,” which I brought up in that review https://www.robbiereviews.com/home/captain-marvel
He is a well-known celebrity that starts out as a “good-guy” and then over the course of the movie becomes a villain. It is quite fun to me. Since he is well-known throughout the world already, people (including me) take a metaphorical sigh of relief when he comes on screen and take to trusting him almost immediately. It’s fun then, to have the “carpet pulled out from under you” as this known “good guy” shows his true colors as a villain.
*Let me take a second to just make a shout out to Colbie Smulders. I, like most of the rest of the world, was introduced to her as Robin on “How I Met Your Mother” or HIMYM as I called it. I will see anything that she is in. I thought she was and has been great as Maria Hill, Agent Nick Fury’s number two and I am so happy for her that she has successfully made the leap from television acting to film acting.
If you know me, or have read my reviews before, you know that I am a sucker for music. I always notice music and I almost always have an opinion on it. This is no different. The music, the score, is wonderful! The music does a great job of sounding like the avengers music but also sounding slightly different. This is effective because this is a new phase of the Avengers where the heroes will be different but their strength and their conviction to fight evil remains intact. Like I’ve said with “Captain Marvel,” there is a hint of Star Wars in the music that accompanies the movie but it was less noticeable as well as the music seemed to ring more like the typical Spider-Man music. Which, I think, will bring some nostalgia to people’s minds, and may cause them to enjoy the movie even more.
The story was fine. I mean, it was quite far-fetched, but it was fine. The thing that really impressed me was the filmmaking. They shot each part of this movie on location, for the most part, and it is clear and worth it because you feel like you are in each European location with them. In fact, I went to Venice just a few years ago. Mm, it was warm, the air felt moist, and I felt careless as to the things of the world. You can feel all of that too, when the movie permits of course. What I am trying to say is that you feel like you are there with the characters which adds to your overall experience and your opinion of the movie.
I really liked this movie. It was a perfect follow-up to “Avengers: Endgame” in that it was comedic, which I think people needed after the emotional three hours that was “Avengers: Endgame.” it paid homage to and honored Tony Stark while still being funny in the way it should have been. I expected to enjoy this movie because I enjoyed “Spider-Man: Homecoming” but I did not expect to enjoy it quite as much as I did.
I would rate this movie a solid 9.4/10.
